Would not recommend the 848 as a first bike at all.

I started in a 250 which was great. Learn the limits and physics of a motorcycle with a bike that doesn't punish you for being ham fisted. For example, say you are slowly doing a maneuver on the 250, and get surprised by another vehicle or something, you instantly grab for the brakes. Not a big deal on the 250 as the suspension is soft and the brakes not powerful. So with a slightly turned handle bar and me braking, my bike absorbs my ham fisted action. I learn in a gentle way that this input was a bit excessive and learn from it day by day.

I then jumped onto a 400cc which was great and just a step up from the 250. More things were learnt obviously.

Now anyway, say you were to have the same surprise on the 848. You grab the brakes on an 848 even with two fingers in a surprised situation... it will put you on your ass.
Now thats just brakes.
Think about handling the throttle through a low speed corner or a faster one with a bump. Being new to a bike you'll probably naturally have locked elbows and a lot of your weight on the handle bars. Hit a bump in a corner and your body will move, which is locked onto the throttle as well meaning you'll either open the throttle at the worst time, or close it in a low speed corner dropping your speed and then dropping the bike.
Now the 250/400 would give you room to make this mistake and learn from it.

You learn from this things rather than having an accident. No accident means we have another rider on the road enjoying this fantastic hobby. That and our insurance premiums are kept in check because you were smart enough to take your time :)

So take some baby steps... a 600 non sports bike would be great as well.
